Hope in the Shadow of Tyranny With The Art Pastor, Steve Thomason

Welcome to a listen-to-learn episode of the Share Life podcast. In this episode, I'm speaking with Steve Thomason about The Gospel of Luke in the Shadow of Tyranny.

Steve is an associate professor of Spiritual Formation and Discipleship at Luther Seminary (now dean of the chapel and campus pastor), a post-Evangelical, missional, neo-Lutheran theologian, rostered in the ELCA, and an artist.  He writes and draws about Spiritual Formation, Biblical Studies, Theology, and Art.

What's This Conversation About?

Years ago, I stumbled upon Steve's YouTube channel regarding a video illustration he did about constructive developmental theory explained in Robert Kegan's book, In Over Our Heads. Steve also produced a phenomenal video about how the cross intervenes during societal and religious retaliation downward spirals.

Most recently, he published a blog that struck me, titled, the Gospel of Luke in the Shadow of Tyranny and we dive into this in further detail as part of this discussion.

In our chat, we explore the themes of the Gospel of Luke in relation to tyranny and the complexities of political discourse within the church. We discuss the importance of empathy, the role of pastors in navigating political tensions, and the need for constructive dialogue in a polarized society. Steve emphasizes the significance of understanding scripture and the life of Jesus as a foundation for addressing contemporary issues, advocating for love, and listening as essential practices in fostering community and reconciliation.
